People looking to stay up on how to best invest their money will often keep a close eye on the financial news. But the financial news is not just for investors, many people not in the investing field keep an eye on the financial news to find out what the future may hold for them and their careers. In some cases the financial news can be bad, such as when a company announces lay-offs to thousands of employees. In other cases the news can be good, such as a company announcing that they are building a world headquarters in your town.

There are so many aspects to the financial news that it can be difficult to keep track of all of it, and it can also be difficult to understand what is worth listening to and what is not important. One of the key economic indicators that the average person follows with great interest is the daily results on the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE is only one financial indicator, but it can be used to show the general health of the American economy. The NYSE will fluctuate up and down constantly, but if it shows sustained amounts of decline then that is bad news for the general economy. However, sustained moments of positive results are an excellent indicator that things are improving. For example, when in a recession the NYSE will usually register consecutive negative days. Small bits of good news here and there may cause a spike, but for the most part it will remain down. An indicator that a recession is ending is a string of positive days for the NYSE.

Until recently, many Americans did not fully understand or appreciate how important the housing market is to the overall American economy. When housing values decline en masse, as they did recently, then the entire economy loses out on the value lost in those homes. When billions of dollars in home value are lost, then that can have a devastating effect on the entire economy. The recovery of the housing market is one of the first things to lead the country out of recession, and that has never been more evident than recently.
